Building Your Core Competence

You’ll begin by completing the three mandatory core units required of all learners:

  • Install, maintain and remove work area protection and safety equipment

  • Conform to general workplace health, safety and welfare

  • Conform to productive work practices

After this, you will progress into a specialist pathway that reflects your day-to-day role. Each pathway has its own mandatory trade-specific units – for example, laying modular paving, installing drainage, placing and compacting concrete, or laying kerbs and channels – along with further optional units chosen to match the tasks you carry out on site.

From the outset, you’ll be supported by a dedicated assessor who will guide you through the process, review your evidence, and provide regular feedback to keep you on track. You will complete:

A specialist pathway, depending on your area of work – for example modular pavement, kerbs and channels, drainage, concreting, excavation, reinstatement, or general construction operations. Each pathway includes trade-specific mandatory units (such as laying kerbs, installing drainage, or placing and compacting concrete) and further optional units to reflect your day-to-day role.

Assessment is based entirely on your workplace performance, using real evidence such as method statements, programmes of work, risk assessments, photographs, reflective accounts, professional discussions, and witness testimonies from colleagues or supervisors.

Most learners complete the qualification within 6 to 12 months, depending on their role and the availability of evidence. All assessment is carried out in the workplace or remotely, with reviews scheduled flexibly to fit around your commitments.
