This work-based qualification is assessed entirely through your current role, with support from an experienced assessor. You’ll gather workplace evidence, reflect on your practice, and demonstrate that you meet the National Occupational Standards for your chosen pathway, such as Slinger/Signaller or Excavator.

Eligibility & Enrolment
Start your journey right
Begin by enrolling and confirming your chosen routeway, for example, Excavator, Slinger/Signaller, Dumper, or Fork-lift Truck. You’ll attend an induction to understand the qualification structure, assessment requirements, and evidence process.

Stage Three
Developing Your Specialist Expertise
You’ll then complete additional units specific to your chosen routeway. Examples include:
Excavator – preparing, operating, and shutting down excavators safely and effectively
Slinger/Signaller – directing plant movement, signalling, and attaching loads safely
Other pathways available – dumper trucks, fork-lift trucks, compacting plant, cranes, transporting loads, and more

Stage Four
Gathering and Presenting Your Evidence
Work with your assessor to compile a portfolio that demonstrates your competence across both core and specialist units. Evidence may include observation records, method statements, site logs, risk assessments, professional discussions, and witness testimonies.

Stage Five
Achieving Your Qualification
Once your portfolio has been assessed and verified, you’ll be awarded the NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations in your chosen routeway.

This work-based qualification is designed to fit around your role, with no classroom attendance required. From the outset, you’ll be supported by a dedicated assessor who will guide you through the process, review your evidence, and provide regular feedback to keep you on track. You will complete:
Three core mandatory units covering:
Conforming to general workplace health, safety and welfare
Conforming to productive work practices
Moving, handling, or storing resources
Specialist routeway units tailored to your chosen discipline, such as:
Operating excavators (180° or 360°)
Working as a slinger/signaller to guide lifting operations
Operating dumpers, fork-lift trucks, compacting plant, cranes, or other plant equipment
Assessment is based entirely on your workplace performance, using real evidence from your day-to-day role. This may include observation records, site logs, method statements, risk assessments, professional discussions, and witness testimonies from supervisors or colleagues. Most learners complete within 6 to 12 months, depending on their role and the availability of evidence. All assessment is carried out in the workplace or remotely, with reviews scheduled flexibly to fit around your work commitments.

Most learners complete within 6 to 12 months, depending on their role, the availability of evidence, and the pace of review meetings. Your assessor will work with you to set a realistic completion timeline that fits alongside your work commitments.
No formal qualifications are required. You must be working in a plant operations role that allows you to generate evidence for assessment.
