This work-based qualification is designed to fit around your role, with no classroom attendance required. You’ll be supported by a dedicated assessor who will guide you through the process, review your evidence, and provide regular feedback.
You will complete:
Three core mandatory units covering safety, productive work practices, and handling resources
Specialist routeway units tailored to your discipline (e.g. slating, tiling, leadwork, thatching, or solar roofing)
Additional access and handover units to evidence safe project completion
Assessment is based on your workplace performance, using real evidence from your day-to-day activities. Most learners complete within 6 to 12 months, with flexible reviews arranged around your work commitments.

The qualification is structured to reflect the wide range of roofing occupations. After completing the three core units, you’ll follow one of ten specialist routeways, such as:
Roof Slater
Roof Tiler
Slater and Tiler
Heritage Roofing (slating, tiling, or lead and hard metals)
Fully Supported Lead and Hard Metal Roofing & Cladding
Thatching
Solar Collector Roofer
You’ll also complete one unit from Group A (Access) and one unit from Group B (Protection and Handover). These confirm your ability to set up safe access and prepare roofs for inspection or handover.
Together, these units ensure you can demonstrate competence in your chosen roofing discipline while meeting the broader safety and quality standards required across the industry.

The NVQ is delivered entirely in the workplace, so you learn and get assessed through your normal job activities. You’ll be allocated a dedicated assessor who will visit you on site or work with you remotely to observe your performance, review your portfolio of evidence, and provide one-to-one guidance. Evidence is gathered from your day-to-day responsibilities, meaning there are no written exams or classroom sessions, this qualification fits around your role.
Most learners complete within 6 to 12 months, depending on their role and evidence availability.
No prior qualifications are required. You must be working in a role as a slinger/signaller to generate the necessary workplace evidence.
Yes. It is nationally recognised, aligned to the National Occupational Standards, and provides a direct route to the Skilled Worker CSCS Blue Card.
